Introduction to Toxic Skincare Trends

You might be potentially harming your skin without you knowing it. Skin care trends come and go all the time but there are certain toxic skincare trends that have been embedded in our culture and our society and sometimes we forgot whether it’s right or wrong and majority of time we continue doing dangerous skincare steps which are harmful for our skin without even us knowing. So, i this article we will discuss toxic skincare trends and you’ll be able to learn what you might be doing that is harming your skin. Here are seven toxic skincare trend or steps that you need to stop right now.

1. Using Physical Exfoliators

Using physical exfoliators or other known as physical scrub is one of the top toxic skincare trend. Physical exfoliators have been part of skin care routine for tens of years and there are many popular skincare brands that still use and sell physical exfoliators. Till now there are many sort of physical exfoliators in the market listed right here and I’m gonna ask you to stop using all of them now.

The question is, isn’t exfoliating good for our skin?

Yes, you  should exfoliate your skin once or twice a week. However, the downfall of physical exfoliators is that it causes micro tears on your skin. The main function of your epidermal layer is to act as a waterproof barrier to prevent nasty stuff like viruses bacteria or even irritants from getting  into your skin but once you have micro tears, all these harmful substances can get into your skin very easily which would make your skin ultra irritated or even cause skin infections.

But some people might say that if I don’t use physical exfoliators, I don’t feel clean. Another downfall of physical exfoliators is you might be applying too little pressure on one part  of your skin and too much pressure on the other part of your skin hence giving you an uneven form of skin exfoliating.

So, what are the alternatives to physical exfoliators you should change to chemical exfoliants. Chemical exfoliants or chemical scrubs are skin care that usually contain  some sort of acid things like glycolic acid, lactic acid or mandelic acid, that helps remove and exfoliate dead skin cells more safely and it doesn’t cause micro tears and give you a more even exfoliating process.

2. Using Ultrasonic face brush

I’m sure you have seen one of these brushes on internet where you see those models smiling, as they are cleaning their skin. Now this is just a demo and this is just a regular brush. An ultrasonic brush vibrates and hence it has this cleansing movement. They claim to give you a more thorough cleansing solution compared to just using regular cleanser, however, you should only use your cleansers for 30 seconds to a minute.

When you’re using one of these brushes, they highly encourage you to use it for five to ten minutes. They claim that it will get into all the deep pores and the ultrasonic vibrations would unclog those pores for you. One of the risks that you’re running  when you’re using ultrasonic brush is that you might be over exfoliating the top layer of your epidermis, called stratum corneum.

By using an ultrasonic brush you  might be over exfoliating your stratum corneum layer whereby you’re stripping off the protective barrier of your skin. This will lead to excessive skin irritation, redness and blotchiness on your skin. There will be even worse skin reaction when you’re using slightly stronger acids or even a retinol  product during your skincare routine.

An ultrasonic brush is not cheap but still one of the toxic skincare trends. A simple google will show you that top-end ultrasonic brushes or cleansers go upwards of a few hundred US dollars per unit. So, what are the alternatives on ultrasonic cleanser or an ultrasonic brush? First just use a regular cleanser and from time to time if you really want to thoroughly cleanse your skin, change to a stronger cleanser which contains higher doses of glycolic, salicylic or lactic acid. You can even use an exfoliating toner more regularly. The money saved from buying an ultrasonic brush can be put into investing in better skin care

3. Micellar face wipes

We all know that micellar water is used to remove extra dirt, oil and even makeup from your skin. However, if you walk to a lot of drugstores you will see micellar face wipes being sold with the marketing message that it’s for convenience, in case you do not have a micellar cleanser nearby. You can use the wipe to remove excessive makeup or excessive oil on your skin.

But one of the downfalls of keeping micellar face wipes with you is that it gives you a false sense of security and makes you think that you have sufficiently removed the makeup or the dirt on your skin. One of the issues with a micellar face wipe is that it’s not as effective as a cleanser, so, eventually there will be build-up of oil and even unremoved makeup from your skin which will lead to skin irritation, skin infection or even breakouts and on top of that micellar face wipes contain certain amount of alcohol that can be irritating to your skin. This is the reason that it can be classified as toxic skincare trend nowadays.

What’s an alternative to this? Just do not use the face wipes and keep the cleansers with you all the time. You can even invest in a small bottle of cleanser whereby you can keep with you and you can use it on the go.

4. Pore Strips

I remember a long time ago when pore strips were first introduced in the market. We found that it was revolutionary because pore strips could remove what we wanted to get rid from our noses blackheads. Before that we used to squeeze and pinch our blackheads and sebaceous filaments from our noses and the pore strips was marketed as a form to remove them once and for all.

However, one of the downside of pore strips even though it can strip away the excessive oil or the blackheads stuck inside your pores but it also tears away a layer of your skin. Other than just removing blackheads and sebaceous filaments, it also excessively tuck your skin and remove the skin which is necessary for protection. Even though pore strips are still massively sold in majority of drugstores and even you can even find them online they are actually not that great for you and are toxic skincare trend.

What are the other alternatives to pore strips? Frequent use of retinol over the areas that you want to remove your blackheads or sebaceous filaments because retinol helps reduce sebum production and using salicylic exfoliant, salicylic toners to remove the blackheads or the sebaceous filaments at least once or twice a week this is more gentle on your skin and it protects your skin in the long run.

5. Charcoal peel-off mask

It is just a huge pore strip for your entire face it does help to remove your blocked pores. However, it strips away so much skin and causes pain and whenever it’s painful it’s not good.

Please avoid all these sort of peel-off mask because it’s not good for you in the long run. Let’s talk about the alternatives? Go back to a chemical exfoliant or a chemical toner once or twice a week and frequent use of vitamin A or retinol to reduce the amount of sebum being produced by your skin.

6. Galvanic Face Massager

People teaches you that galvanic massager can help contour the face, giving you a slimmer looking face. They claim that it will improve lymphatic drainage which will shrink your jawline, tighten the skin and give you the facelift. I’ve tried it and it does not work hence proving it to be one of the toxic skincare trend.

In order for you to really get facelift, you need surgical interventions on top of just these sort of galvanic facelift massager tools. As you get older, your face droops not only because of the skin issues, it is also the displacement of fats which no matter how many times you use this kind of tools, the fats do not move. You might be able to tighten your skin using electrostatic which are produced by these tools.

The fats in your face will not be magically placed in the right position. Unfortunately for a facelift, the only guaranteed way is a surgical intervention. There is a non-surgical portion of a facelift called a HIFU, a high intensity focus ultrasound, but the best is still surgical intervention.

7. Exfoliating Gloves

We all know about exfoliating the skin on our face but what about the body? Does it require exfoliation? Truth be told, occasional exfoliation is good for the skin on your body so that renewal of your skin can be quicker.

However, we have seen gloves like these being sold online and occasional usage of the gloves is fine once a week once a month is fine but sometimes the gloves are pretty rough and pretty coarse. If you overuse it or you apply too much strength it can cause the same micro tears on your skin which will lead to infection whether it’s due to bacteria or fungus or at the same time cause injury to your skin. You should avoid exfoliating gloves or even certain cloths that are meant for exfoliation on your skin or your body.

So what are the alternatives? If you really want to exfoliate the dead skin on your body you can use salicylic acid creams or even lactic acid body lotions they give you a more safer more gentle and a more even form of exfoliation.
