ToggleTop 5 Mistakes People Make When Using Toners
Toners are an essential step in our daily skin care routine. Some of us use toners and some of us don’t use toners. However, if you’re using toners you might not be using them correctly. Here, in this article, I will explain how to use toner and what are the top five mistakes that you might be committing when using toners.
What is a Toner?
A lot of us start our skin care journey without truly understanding why are we using certain skin care steps like a cleanser, toner, moisturizer and serum or at the same time when we are using them we do not know how to actually apply them we just go in blindly. But before we go we get into the today’s topic let’s talk about what are toners?
Toners are generally an essential step in skin care. Now even though I mentioned it’s essential, some might use it some might not use it. What is a toner? A toner is a very viscous liquid which is used for applying on your skin right after your cleanser. It is meant to hydrate your skin and at the same time exfoliate dead skin cells. Toners were first created many many years ago to exfoliate dead skin cells and unclog pores. However, today the function of toner have now increased to hydration, exfoliation and at the same time even some toners have anti-aging properties in them.
When Should You Use a Toner?
You should use a toner if you want to either:
- Hydrate your skin.
- Exfoliate your skin.
How to Use Toner? and Mistakes to Avoid
You should always use a toner after your cleanser and before your moisturizer because of its aqueous formula. The more liquid and watery it is, the easier for it to absorb. However, many people ask about how to use toner and we realize that there’s a lot of people who do not know how to use toners properly.
So here are the top five total mistakes that you might be making:
1.Using the Wrong Toner
A hydrating toner hydrates your skin. It’s great for people with sensitive skin and for people with dry skin, normal skin or even combination skin. Generally a hydrating toner does not contain much oils but it does contain many minor active ingredients that is mean to hydrate your skin.
The next is astringent toner which generally exfoliates dead skin cells. An astringent or exfoliating toner exfoliates skin cells and from time to time it might hydrate your skin or it might dry up your skin depending on the function of the toner.
If you have dry sensitive skin, you should always choose a hydrating toner so make sure you don’t mix it up because it will be detrimental to your skin. If you’re not sure what toners to choose you can always ask skin consultants around you or you can comment here and we try and help you out with how to use toner and what brand to choose.
2. Using Cotton Pad with your Toners
There is a generic video going around and I’m sure a lot of you have seen it before. Someone taking tone off the shelf and pumping it into a cotton pad and then using a cotton pad and applying toners on the face.
You should not do that because the cotton pad will absorb more than 50 to 60 percent of your toners and at the same time when you’re rubbing on your skin, you are actually exfoliating your skin very very hard and very tough that it gives that scrubbing motion. The cotton pad is the harmful for your skin even though your toner is on it. Because of insufficient toner getting in your skin and the cotton pad rubbing against your skin you might injure your skin or cause the skin to be very sensitive.
If you’re using a hydrating toner, you can actually apply on your palms and then using it to pat on your face and remember not to rub it in and do not use a cotton pad.
3. Not Using a Cotton Pad
I understand this might debunk or it might clash against the point that we had before this, but if your main goal is to exfoliate and unclog your pores and you’re using an astringent toner you should never apply it directly on your palms. It will then over exfoliate and drive the skin on your palms and triggering to skin allergies or eczema in some cases.
So if you’re using an exfoliating toner and you want to remove excess oil and unclog your pores you should always use a cotton pad to absorb the toner. It will give it a more even application and the rubbing motion would also help exfoliate skin cells much more effectively than just patting it on your skin.
4. Using a Toner with Alcohol
Many years ago alcohol was an essential component in exfoliating toners. Exfoliating or astringent toners relied on alcohol to dry up your skin and to remove the excessive sebum. However, moving forward in this year, alcohol has no place in toners anymore because of the advancement in skin care technology and now we have so many different toners to choose from. Please choose a non-alcohol toners.
5. Using a Toner with Fragrance
Fragrance is important in skin care because without fragrance we do not want to actually apply skincare on skin because it smells bad. However, if you are applying your cleanser or your toners, you do not actually need any fragrance because it’s a very simple and quick step. So avoid any sort of fragrance in toners especially if they’re added fragrance. It is okay if it’s due to the any botanical active ingredients in the toners that give it that smell but please if it’s possible avoid toners with fragrance.
Conclusion
Using a toner correctly can greatly improve your skincare routine, but it’s important to avoid these common mistakes about how to use toner. Choose the right toner for your skin type, use the appropriate application method, and steer clear of toners with alcohol and added fragrances. By doing so, you can ensure that your toner works effectively, leaving your skin hydrated, exfoliated, and glowing.
